Visitation to United States

Hi My now husband(mexican) and I(american recently were married in Mexico) In Dec 09 we were crossing the US- Mexican border and he was detained because of our fiance status…they would not allow him to visit the US. We then applied for a fiance visa yet since we married we now have to cancel it based on our current status (married). We don´t have current plans to live in the United States( we live in Mexico) but I would like for my now husband to be able to visit when I go to the US as well. What is the necessary actions we need to take for this to be possible, is there a special visa for this? We don´t know if we should process a green card because we won´t be able to live outside the US for a long period correct? PLease let me know the necessary actions in order for him to visit the US.
