L1 B VISA - Resigning from the current employer

Hi - I am on L1-B Work VISA entered into USA on 5/24/2009, living with family and my I-94 is valid till 5/23/2012. I dont have any other valid VISA. I have submitted my resignation to my current employer and I am on Notice period (2 weeks) till 5/20/2011. Can I stay in this country beyond 5/20/2011 and apply for a H1B with a change of Status? For H1-B conversion do I need to wait till October 2011 or Is it possible to convert L1-B to H1 B with change of status now?
If not how many days maximum I can stay in this country after my notice period to travel Back to India or Do I need to Exit the country before 5/20/2011?
