About applying for H-1B

Hello sir,

I am currently a fourth year student at UVA.
I have been talking with several companies about my job eligibility status. I want to make sure about one thing, and my potential employers have asked me about the same thing.

Will I be able to apply to H-1B visa while I am in school - April 2010 - (if I'm offered a job)?

I know I can use the OPT for my first year after graduation and apply for H-1B during 2011. But if I apply for H-1B the following year (April 2011), it will create a time gap between 2011 June (when my OPT ends) ~ 2011 October 1st, which is unfavorable for both myself and my employer.

So bottomline,
Could I apply to H-1B Visa next semester, if I receive a job offer?
Are there any other important facts I should consider for H-1B Visa?

Thank you.
