Q.

waiting h1b answer while in b2 status

I'm an Italian citizen currently in the US with a B2 visa . My I-94 expires on 24 agoust 2009 .I found a good job opportunity in the US and my sponsor filed a petition for a H1B job (a Microbiologist position that will eventualy starts on october 1 2009) on may 7 2009. We are still waiting for an answer from USCSI. Actually we recived a initial request for evidence on 23 july about a TARP missing question on my I-129 form (we sent back the requested evidence immediatly the same day). I checked on line and my case has been resumed.
My question is : Can i extend my B2 status while waiting for an answer ?
Could the request of a B2 exension interfere negatively with the H1B petition?
How can i eventualy fill the gap between my I-94 expiration date and the beginning of my H1b Visa ?
