H1-b Stamping and Passport Expiry

My wife is on an H1-b visa which expired in September 2011. It was renewed and we have the original I-797.
We had no plans to travel, but we just found out of a medical situation of a family member, and we HAVE to travel first week of January.
Her Passport expires on 2.12.2012.
I read about the Passport validity needs to be 6 months beyond stamping or arrival date but then I also read about a list of exempt countries, so I am not able to comprehend.
1. Does her passport need to be renewed in order to apply for stamping?
2. Read somewhere that she can get stamped but the 1-94 will only be issued until the passport validity date. a. Is this true? b. Can I-94 validity be xtended later after we come back in the 3rd wk of Jan?
3. Considering that we HAVE to travel, what are our options?
