Visa stamping in Canada/Mexico H2B to H1B

Came to US in Jan 2002 on H2B visa, extended three times, changed to H1B in Jan 2004, changed employer. Got 7th year extension, valid up to Jan 2012. Labor filed in Aug 2007. Got approved I140 in Jul 2008. All these times never traveled out of US. Never out of status. Planning to travel to India. Which is advisable - stamping in Canada/Mexico? Or in India? Can I go to any consulate in India or only to Consulate for my jurisdiction, Chennai? What documents needed and what questions can I expect? If Canada/Mexico can I take my wife for H4 stamping? She came in Jul 2006 never traveled out of US. Got renewed I-94 valid up to Jan 2012
