I-512L - Travel risks + wait waiver

My wife entered the US on a J-1 on 8/19/07. She received an extension, which expired on 8/19/09. We married on 8/25/09 and the 130/485 was "received" on 9/18/09.
First, what risk do we have for a visit to her mother, sisters, and terminally ill grandmother in Colombia on her approved (w/o conditions) I-512L?
The second issue HAS NOT at this time been raised by Immigration - but J-1s are usually subject to a 2 year wait period unless granted a waiver. However, her visa and J-1 expressly state that she is NOT subject to the waiting period. What risk do we have with this issue and how does it affect travel abroad with the I-512L?
Thanks!
