F-1 OPT, H1B application Filed, Return to F-1

I am working on my OPT post MS completion in Dec-2008. My employer has applied for my H1B but the status is not yet known.

I have an admit for PhD program at my current university and would like to continue studying. My F-1 was stamped for my current university valid till 2012.

How do I get back to my F-1 status in Fall for my PhD program? Do I need a new visa stamping immediately? What happens to my H1B petition?
How do the visa statuses get resolved?

What action do I have to take and when?Is there any time line for the action to be taken?
