Q.

H1B Cancellation to OPT

On F1,OPT ext valid till Nov2010.Approved H1B in April'09 COS-effective Oct1 but was laidoff & H1B cancellation application sent on 23rd Sep'09 and was canceled on 28 Oct'09.My college DSO has requested SEVIS helpdesk for datafix on 28 Sep'09 & 2nd request on 5 Oct'09,yet my current SEVIS status is "Completed".My college DSO made another request on 2 Dec'09 & was informed that they will have to verify my H1 cancellation date and work on my case again.
1)What is my current status & How will I know? Nobody incl USCIS seems to know.
2)Am I violating my grace period by staying in US till my case is resolved? How can I be sure that I am legal in U.S?
3)Should I wait for my college DSO to datafix my SEVIS or Can I hire an Immigration lawyer to datafix my SEVIS?
