Filing I-485 by Former Employer

I have an approved I-140 (not withdrawn) from a former employer PD March'10. I moved to current employer in Dec ’10(7th year extension) who has not initiated my GC as yet .
I'd like to get I-485 filed by former employer(when PD is current) and can go back and work for them in good faith.I know that GC is for future employment but in view of the recent RFEs /random denials:

1.If I-485 filed by former employer is denied by USCIS -will it end my case completely- or can current employer initiate GC filing afresh and still capture the earlier I-140 PD (despite earlier denial of I-485)?
