L1B Visa

I'm on a L1B visa, it will be renewed in 20010 for another 2 yrs. My company is sponsoring me for a green card and I was working with a lawyer that was based out of California. I was doing a labor cert. with him when my HR dept told me they were switching law firms because of this lawyer's health. Now all the work I have done with this lawyer has been lost and I have to re-start with this big corporate law firm that I don't have much faith in. My fear is that I will run out of time on my L1B and have to go back to Canada while my green card app. is still in the works. I really have about 34 months left on this L1B. So I have two questions: 1. What if I run of time...what happens, can I get an extension to my L1B? 2. Would you be able to pick up a labor cert that is already in progress?
