Visitor Visa Extension

My In-laws have a 10 Year Multiple Visitor Visa(B2). They came to USA on Visitor Visa in May 12 2011 their I-94 is valid up to Nov 11 2011. We have applied for an extension of stay on Sep 22 2011 for 4 more months up to March 11 2012. We have received the receipt for the extension that we have applied.
Can they legally stay in USA after Nov 11 2011 while their extension is pending with USCIS?
If the extension gets rejected how soon should they leave USA? If the extension gets rejected will it be a problem when they comeback to USA next time because they have overstayed last time they were in USA? Will it have any impact on their 10 year multiple visa? In forums they have mentioned that the 10 years visa will get void can you please let us know if that is possible?
