Question on Extension of Visitor's Visa(Inlaws are Indians)

My in-laws' I-94 is stamped for August 05th (arrived here early Feb) but we are considering extending their visitor’s visa. Their 10-year visa is slated to expire in 3rd week of October. Over the last 10 years or so we have applied for 3 extensions. 2 of them have been accepted and the third one was rejected (one last year when it was rejected due to lack of documentation). They have never over-stayed their period in any of the circumstances. Questions – Is it possible to request just a 2 month extension given their visa expiring situation. I am normally used to requesting a 6 month extension and hence not sure. - Are the chances of rejection higher due to all of the above constraints? – Will applying for extension now affect application of new 10-yr visa or green card(for future)?
